Career changes / Moving into HR

We’re seeing increasing numbers of applications from people looking to completely change career.
For one, we’re seeing more and more Teachers looking to leave their profession. As a parent this saddens me hugely, and whilst this probably isn’t the place to be analysing the reasons for this trend, as a Recruiter I can offer some advice around how best to make a complete career change….

1) If possible, make a sideways move with your existing Employer
2) If there aren’t internal opportunities where you work, leverage the sector experience you have i.e. change job type but within the same sector. For example, if you are a Teacher, a sensible move would be to move into a Learning & Development role for a University or Academy Trust. Might be worth dropping your CV to a couple of their Recruitment/ Talent Acquisition teams…..
3) You may have to do some of the legwork yourself. We’d love to place everyone we speak to but realistically when external clients come to us, given they are paying a fee, they expect us to find people who tick as many boxes as possible on their person specification. For us at Folk, there is usually an expectation that we are representing candidates with some HR experience.
4) Be willing to undertake some voluntary work even if just a couple of hours a week to get some initial experience

Good luck! And of course feel free to contact anyone of us here at Fólk if you need any advice on changing career.
